Julie Andrews Makes Rare Public Appearance in the Hamptons

Julie Andrews, the revered actress known for her iconic roles in "Mary Poppins" and "The Sound of Music," has been seen in public for the first time since celebrating her 91st birthday and announcing her retirement from on-screen acting. The rare sighting occurred on Friday in the Hamptons, where Andrews has largely retreated from the public eye.

Andrews was photographed while getting out of a car in Sag Harbor, dressed in a raincoat, baseball cap, and sunglasses, attire suited for the rainy weather. This appearance marks a notable moment for the actress, who has embraced a more private lifestyle in recent years. Her neighbors in Sag Harbor have also noted her reclusive nature, with sightings becoming infrequent.

Earlier this year, Andrews confirmed her retirement from acting, stating in an interview that she felt it was time to step away after a career spanning decades. She explained her decision not to reprise her role as Queen Clarisse in the upcoming "Princess Diaries" sequel, indicating that the film would likely flourish without her involvement.

An insider told the Daily Mail that Andrews now prefers to spend her time at home in Sag Harbor, tending to her garden and being close to her family, particularly her daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton, and her grandchildren. While she maintains a private life, she is described as someone who remains impeccably dressed when she does venture out for occasional meetings, such as tea with friends.

Andrews' illustrious career began with her film debut in the 1964 film "Mary Poppins," for which she won an Academy Award. She went on to star in other acclaimed films like "The Sound of Music" (1965), "Thoroughly Modern Millie" (1967), "Darling Lili" (1970), and "Victor/Victoria" (1982). She also played Queen Clarisse Renaldi in "The Princess Diaries" (2001) and its 2004 sequel.

In recognition of her contributions to the arts, Andrews was made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II in 2000. She has also received numerous other accolades, including seven Golden Globes and three Tony nominations.
