Judy Finnigan has largely withdrawn from public life, a decision friends attribute to a combination of personal choice, a desire to focus on family, and past health struggles, rather than any discord with her husband, Richard Madeley.
Recent photographs showed the couple, who became national television fixtures in the 1990s hosting ITV's "This Morning," enjoying a meal together. While Madeley, 70, remains a prominent television personality, hosting "Good Morning Britain" and other programs, Finnigan, 78, has made rare public appearances.
Sources close to the couple emphasize the enduring strength of their four-decade marriage. A longtime friend described Madeley as being "completely and utterly in love" with Finnigan, noting that the thought of infidelity has "never crossed his mind." The couple met 44 years ago at Granada Television, both married to other partners at the time, and began a romance after divorcing their previous spouses. They married in 1986.
Their on-screen chemistry led to their selection as hosts for "This Morning" in 1988, a show they fronted for 13 years. Following their departure from "This Morning" in 2001, they hosted their own Channel 4 show, "Richard & Judy," for seven years. Since then, Finnigan has appeared only sporadically on television, including occasional segments on "Loose Women."
While some have speculated about ageism or Finnigan resenting her husband's continued media presence, friends maintain she is content and supportive of Madeley's career. "As long as Richard is wanted on television, he will do it. He loves it and Judy has always been very supportive of his career," a close friend stated. The friend added that Finnigan still assists Madeley with show preparation and provides feedback.
Finnigan's retreat from the television limelight predates recent years. In a 2013 interview, she admitted to having "never felt secure on television" and stated, "I don’t miss it at all. I didn’t like being in the limelight, and at times it felt as if I was on a treadmill. TV sucked the life out of me."
A significant health event occurred in 2018 when Finnigan suffered a near-fatal ruptured stomach ulcer, requiring two life-saving blood transfusions.
Away from television, Finnigan has focused on other pursuits, including writing several novels. She and Madeley also continue to run their popular Book Club, now operating online. She is also a devoted grandmother to five grandchildren and reportedly takes her role with them very seriously.
Friends describe Finnigan as having a "great sense of humour," which serves her well in her relationship with Madeley, whose on-air persona has sometimes drawn comparisons to Alan Partridge on social media. "Richard is just Richard," one source commented. "He’ll always say and do things that leave Judy rolling her eyes or pulling a face, but it’s just who he is, and she can’t help but love him for it."
The couple reportedly maintains their romance through regular date nights at local restaurants. "They love having a giggle and a glass of wine," said one source. "Their relationship has been based on laughing. It’s lovely."
