Judge Reinstates Maurene Comey, Daughter of Ex-FBI Director, Fired by Trump DOJ
A federal judge ruled that the Trump administration unlawfully dismissed Maurene Comey from her role as a federal prosecutor and ordered her reinstatement with back pay.
Maurene Comey, daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, was unlawfully fired from her position as a federal prosecutor, a federal judge ruled Monday. U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman ordered the Trump administration to reinstate Comey to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York and to provide her with back pay.
In a 55-page order, Furman stated that while Congress granted the Attorney General the power to remove prosecutors, the administration violated the limits placed on that power in Comey's case. The judge added that allowing the dismissal to stand would disrupt the nation's constitutional balance.
Comey, who had a distinguished tenure, was dismissed in July 2025. Her past work included significant roles in the prosecutions of Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, and Sean “Diddy” Combs.
The ruling comes after the Supreme Court's June decision expanded the administration's authority to fire federal officials at will. The Justice Department is expected to appeal Judge Furman’s decision.
Meanwhile, James Comey is scheduled for arraignment in January 2027 on federal charges in North Carolina, which he claims are the result of vindictive prosecution.
