Judge Orders Trump Administration to Halt Taxpayer-Funded TV Ads
A federal judge has mandated the cancellation of remaining taxpayer-funded television commercials promoting President Trump's political message.

U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Rochon in New York issued a temporary restraining order Sunday night, directing the Trump administration to cancel any outstanding television commercials paid for with taxpayer funds that promote the president's political message. The order came in response to a challenge by a coalition, including the nonpartisan watchdog Common Cause, which argued the ads constituted an illegal misuse of funds.
The judge's order stated that "Defendants shall not enter into, renew, or expand any agreement authorizing the development, creation, dissemination, placement, or airing of the challenged advertisements" for the two-week duration of the order. This injunction included any ads scheduled to air on Sunday night.
The Justice Department, in a court filing on Saturday, had argued that the temporary restraining order was unnecessary, asserting that "the alleged offending conduct will end tomorrow," implying the ad campaign was already concluding.
The Department of Homeland Security allocated $20 million in taxpayer money for the ad campaign. Legal experts have suggested that this use of funds may violate federal statutes prohibiting the use of congressionally appropriated money for "publicity or propaganda." The funds utilized for these ads were part of a $175 million package Congress provided to the department for immigration enforcement.
The White House had previously defended the ads, characterizing them as public service announcements similar to those used by past administrations to promote policies. However, critics pointed out that these recent ads differed from many past public service announcements, as they were not designed to inform the public about specific government programs. One of the advertisements was noted to be nearly identical to an ad that Trump had run during his 2024 presidential reelection campaign.
