Tens of thousands of Americans are participating in a march across New York state to protest the breeding and experimental testing of beagles. The protest, which began on September 12, is set to conclude on September 26 at the gates of Marshall BioResources, identified as the largest commercial breeding facility of its kind in the country.

Judge Judy, a prominent television personality and dog owner, has publicly supported the initiative, urging an end to what she describes as unnecessary and cruel practices. "On Sept. 12, tens of thousands of outraged Americans will march across NY state to demand the end of unnecessary experimental testing and the cruel breeding of beagle dogs for the express purpose of being tortured," she stated in a comment shared by the New York Post.

Marshall BioResources, a for-profit company, breeds and houses approximately 20,000 animals, selling them for between $1,000 to $2,000 each for experimental purposes. Estimates suggest the company generates over $12 million annually for the Marshall family.

This protest follows an earlier event where over 2,000 beagles were reportedly liberated from Ridglan Farms in Wisconsin, leading to the closure of the facility and the revocation of its lead veterinarian's license. Beagles are frequently chosen for laboratory testing due to their perceived temperament. "Beagles are 'small, friendly, trusting and forgiving.' Perfect for repeated torture," the statement attributed to Judge Judy noted. The animals are reportedly used in experiments for a range of products, including cosmetics and household cleaners, in addition to medical research.

Advocates argue that advancements in artificial intelligence and lab-grown cells could replace much of the animal testing currently conducted. The protest highlights a perceived slowness by lawmakers to address the issue. Judge Judy suggested that candidates who support the cause may gain electoral favor in New York.
