Judge Ada Brown Ordered to Undergo Psychiatric Evaluation Amid Misconduct Probe

U.S. District Judge Ada Brown, appointed by former President Donald Trump, has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric examination as part of a judicial misconduct investigation. The Fifth Circuit Judicial Council temporarily removed Brown from her docket earlier this month following a complaint filed in May by attorney Ezra Young.

Allegations of Racial Remarks

The investigation centers on Brown's conduct during an April hearing where she presided over a sanctions case against Young. Young was representing a Black law professor suing Southern Methodist University for alleged discrimination in tenure denial. Brown had previously revoked Young's permission to practice in her courtroom.

During the hearing, Brown allegedly made a series of racially charged remarks toward Young. According to transcripts, Brown referred to Young as a "White savior" who was intimidated by "Black excellence" due to his "White mediocrity." She repeatedly commented on Young's complexion, calling him "White presenting" and "fair-skinned," despite being informed he was Latino.

Brown also accused Young of "bullying" Black attorneys in the case and characterized him as a "Chad," which she described as the male equivalent of "Karen" – someone who "calls the manager when they don’t get their way."

The judge further alleged that Young was sensationalizing the case, particularly after a news article quoted his brief and referenced a comparison of the professor's situation to a "lynching."

Judge's Response and Background

Brown, who is Black and Native American, was appointed to the federal court in Texas in March 2019 and is the first Black woman to serve in that court. In a July 28 filing responding to the complaint, Brown defended her actions, stating she did not believe her demeanor was inappropriate and referring to the discussions about race as "candid conversations."

She wrote that she had "lessons learned from this experience" and asked the Chief Judge to consider her "candor" and commitment to mentorship when determining a disposition. Brown also acknowledged the importance of public confidence in the judiciary.

Young's complaint and Brown's response were reportedly shared via email with lawyers, judges, and media outlets. The Fifth Circuit Judicial Council's decision to order a psychiatric examination marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the judge's conduct.
