Libby Purves, a former presenter on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, has described a recent interview between current presenter Emma Barnett and Kemi Badenoch as a "car-crash aggression" that wasted an opportunity for substantive political discussion. Purves expressed surprise that Barnett, 41, was assigned the interview with the Leader of the Opposition, suggesting it might have been better suited for a more seasoned political interviewer like Nick Robinson, 62.
Purves, who was one of the youngest and first female regular presenters on Today nearly five decades ago, drew on her own experiences to reflect on the dynamics and hierarchy of the program. She noted that when she started, senior male colleagues like Brian Redhead and John Timpson, with extensive journalistic backgrounds, handled the more challenging political interviews. Purves recalled understanding the importance of stepping aside for experienced colleagues when a story demanded it, even when she had expertise in other areas.
"It didn't go well. You can taste the dismay online, even from the Left, at a chance wasted," Purves wrote, questioning the editorial decision behind assigning the interview. She speculated whether the choice was an attempt to "sidelin[e] the old white bloke" in favor of a younger female dynamic, but ultimately stated she did not know the reason.
Purves recounted meeting Barnett when she was considering the Today role and warned her it "mightn't be fun," particularly given the demands of the early morning schedule, family life, and health considerations. She suggested that Barnett might not easily find a comfortable path through the program's "difficult encounters both on-air and off," unlike presenter Mishal Husain. Purves concluded by expressing hope for Barnett's future endeavors.
The article, published on September 12, 2026, also touched upon the changing nature of the Today programme, noting an increase in live interviews, bantering, and a perceived undue reverence for personality, while acknowledging the persistent live news tension and punishing early mornings.
