Josh Duhamel Criticizes Netflix for "Ransom Canyon" Cancellation
The actor expressed disappointment and surprise over the decision to end the neo-Western series after two seasons.
Actor Josh Duhamel has publicly voiced his disappointment and criticism regarding Netflix's decision to cancel his neo-Western series, "Ransom Canyon." Duhamel, 53, stated he was "upset" and "surprised" by the cancellation, especially considering the show's performance.
"I thought [it was safe] because the show was No. 1 for almost two weeks and the numbers looked really, really good and people really loved the show," Duhamel said in an interview with Us Weekly. He added that he was "a little upset with Netflix for not giving the audience another season, because people really did love the show." However, he acknowledged the business realities, stating, "I get it. They have their reasons for why things stay and why things go. I don't always understand those reasons, but it's not my job to question."
"Ransom Canyon," which debuted on Netflix in April of last year, was based on Jodi Thomas's book series. Duhamel starred as Staten Kirkland, a rancher in the fictional town of Ransom Canyon, Texas. He noted a personal connection to the role, mentioning his own move to a rustic lakeside home in Minnesota, which he calls his "doomsday cabin."
"For me, Staten and Quinn are meant to be together and that is the true north of our series," said showrunner April Blair in a July interview, referencing Duhamel's onscreen love interest, Quinn, played by Minka Kelly. Blair had previously revealed that season three would have explored the challenges that arise after characters choose each other and begin a relationship, uncovering "people's dirty little secrets."
Netflix announced the cancellation last month, following the release of the show's first two seasons. The streamer cited declining viewership as the reason for ending the series. Duhamel expressed sympathy for the fans, saying, "I just feel bad for the fans who are really invested in it, and that's it, unfortunately."
Despite the disappointment, Duhamel indicated he is open to similar roles in the future, stating, "I'd much rather play a cowboy than a defense attorney." He mentioned that he has other projects in the works, though they are too far off to discuss.
The series also featured Garrett Wareing, Lizzy Greene, Marianly Tejada, Andrew Liner, James Brolin, and Jack Schumacher. The second season premiered earlier this year.
