Josh Brolin Attributes 12 Years of Sobriety to Strict Morning Ritual
The actor credits a daily 6 a.m. recovery meeting and a renewed sense of purpose for his sustained sobriety.
Actor Josh Brolin has maintained 12 years of sobriety by adhering to a strict morning ritual that includes a daily recovery meeting.
Brolin described his commitment to sobriety as a cornerstone of his life, stemming from years of struggling with alcohol. He told The Telegraph that "drinking got boring in the end." His turning point came after an incident where he woke up on the sidewalk outside his home, prompting him to re-evaluate his life's direction. "Which way was I going to go for the rest of my life?" he recalled.
The actor attends a recovery meeting via Zoom every morning at 6 a.m. sharp. He stated that sobriety has brought him more enjoyment than drinking ever did. "I love being sober. I’m having way more fun now than I ever did drinking, and I never end up in jail, which is a real bonus," Brolin said.
In addition to his sobriety from alcohol, Brolin has also spoken about his struggles with nicotine addiction. During a 2024 appearance on the podcast "WTF with Marc Maron," he revealed that nicotine pouches had become a frequent habit after he quit chewing tobacco. He described keeping the pouches "all over the house" and sometimes using them unconsciously, even while asleep. "My wife would hear this in the middle of the night," Brolin said, mimicking a chewing sound. "I don't even know I'm doing it. I'm asleep. I have a pouch in my lip, and I'm not f---ing lying — 24 hours a day."
Brolin's memoir, "From Under the Truck," published in 2024, delves into his personal experiences with addiction and recovery. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that nicotine is highly addictive and that nicotine pouches contain nicotine, flavorings, and other ingredients absorbed through the gums. The long-term health effects of these products are still under investigation.
Brolin, known for his roles in "Avengers: Endgame" and "No Country for Old Men," also stars in the upcoming film "Whalefall."
