Josh Allen Caught Chewing Smelling Salts in Bizarre 'TNF' Scene

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen was observed chewing on a packet of smelling salts during the team's 41-31 victory against the Detroit Lions on Thursday night at Highmark Stadium. Prime Video cameras captured the moment in the first quarter while the Bills held a 7-0 lead, just before a commercial break.

Allen delivered a strong performance, accounting for five total touchdowns, including three passing and two rushing. He scored the first touchdown at the new stadium on a 1-yard run in the first quarter. His play has placed him in early MVP discussions. The incident of him chewing smelling salts led to online commentary, with some joking about it providing him with an energy boost.

Smelling salts, which contain ammonium carbonate, are typically used by first responders as stimulants to revive individuals who have fainted. Athletes also use them to achieve a sudden increase in alertness or energy.

According to a memo sent to NFL players last August, while the use of smelling salts and ammonia inhalants is permitted, team personnel are prohibited from distributing them or any other ammonia inhalant during pregame activities, games, and halftime on the sidelines or in locker rooms.

Allen completed 20 of 31 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns, adding 69 rushing yards and two scores.

Following the game, Allen reflected on his role, stating, "I caught myself taking it all in, and understanding how cool what I get to do. My job is the coolest thing in the world. It’s everything I ever wanted, to be the quarterback of an NFL franchise. I’m just very fortunate to have ended up in Buffalo and got to be the first quarterback to open this stadium, which is a special spot."

Allen had previously thrown for four touchdowns in Buffalo's season-opening 36-31 win over Houston. The Bills are scheduled to host the Chargers next Sunday.
