Jonathan Ross Seeks Approval for Large Barn at Luxury Farm

Television presenter Jonathan Ross has submitted a planning application to Dorset Council for a new agricultural storage building at his Grade II-listed farm in Swanage. The proposed 16-meter-long barn is intended to house garden machinery and a workshop, according to planning documents.

Ross, who owns a six-acre non-working farm valued at £2 million, has assured the council that the structure will not be used as a recreational facility. The planning statement, prepared by AddisonRees Planning Consultancy Ltd, emphasizes that the barn would remain ancillary to the existing farm complex and would not introduce a separate commercial or recreational use into the countryside. It is planned to store tractors, land management equipment, and facilitate minor maintenance.

The proposed barn would feature cedar cladding above a brick plinth and a traditional tiled roof. Ross's planning team stated that the barn's design and scale would minimize its visibility from public vantage points and would not negatively impact the amenity of neighboring properties in terms of light or privacy.

The property already includes an orchard, stables, and a 50-meter indoor swimming pool. However, Ross is also involved in a separate dispute with developers proposing a housing estate near his farm. Developers aim to convert the former Harrow House International College into a mix of flats and homes to meet local housing targets. Initially planned for 93 homes, the proposal has been reduced to 73 units following objections from council departments and the town council, which cited concerns about the lack of affordable housing.

Ross has lodged a formal objection to the housing development, expressing concerns about a loss of privacy due to the proximity and height of the proposed new buildings, which he believes would overlook his property's bedrooms. He also cited potential impacts on local life, traffic, and wildlife. Ross stated that he has declined offers from developers to purchase his land due to his awareness of the potential impact on the community.

The developers have revised their plans, and the reduction in the number of houses is presented as a response to feedback received from planning officers. Despite these adjustments, the project continues to face opposition.
