Jonathan Lipnicki, Child Star of 'Jerry Maguire,' Makes Rare Red Carpet Appearance

Jonathan Lipnicki, who achieved child stardom at age six for his role as Ray Boyd in the 1996 film "Jerry Maguire," recently made a rare public appearance at the premiere of A24's "Primetime." The actor, now 35, walked the red carpet for the psychological crime thriller and media satire, in which he has a brief cameo.

Lipnicki, known for his role opposite Tom Cruise and Renée Zellweger, notably delivered the unscripted line, "The human head weighs eight pounds," in "Jerry Maguire." His performance earned him a Critics' Choice Award for Best Child Performance and a Young Artist Award.

For the "Primetime" premiere, Lipnicki sported a sage-green suit with a black button-up shirt and a purple pocket square. The distinctive glasses he wore as a child in "Jerry Maguire" were absent; he underwent LASIK eye surgery at 18. He also sported a close-cropped beard.

"Primetime" explores the behind-the-scenes drama of the NBC reality series "To Catch a Predator." Robert Pattinson stars as host Chris Hansen, and Phoebe Bridgers makes her feature film debut.

Lipnicki's path to his breakout role in "Jerry Maguire" involved a near-miss. He initially did not get the part and was not considered during a recasting because he had already auditioned. However, his agent advocated for him, securing an audition with director Cameron Crowe and star Tom Cruise. Lipnicki recalled having good chemistry with Cruise during the audition process in Arizona, which ultimately led to him getting the role.

He previously told ABC News that he was a fan of Cruise after watching "Top Gun." Working with Zellweger and Cruise, whom he considered "like real parents," was a significant experience. Lipnicki stated that "Jerry Maguire" "changed the trajectory of my life" and solidified his desire to pursue acting.

Following "Jerry Maguire," Lipnicki starred in "Meego," "Stuart Little," and "Like Mike," and appeared in television shows such as "Dawson's Creek."

During high school, Lipnicki prioritized sports, playing baseball, basketball, and water polo. He opted against college to return to acting full-time. He has spoken about facing professional setbacks, including a producer's comment at age 19 that he "used to be cute." Lipnicki channeled this experience into a 2014 YouTube video titled "You Used to Be Cute."

In addition to his cameo in "Primetime," Lipnicki's recent acting credits include the thriller "Anywhere," released this year, and upcoming films "Sarah's Oil" and "Cottonmouth," both slated for 2025, as well as the 2024 horror film "Camp Pleasant Lake."
