Jonah Tong's Strong Outing Marks Key Moment in Mets Pitching Development

Jonah Tong's latest audition with the New York Mets concluded Saturday with a performance that highlighted his potential, yet underscored the ongoing questions about his role in the team's future.

Tong, a rookie right-hander, surrendered just one earned run over five innings, striking out a career-high nine batters in the Mets' 7-1 victory over the Washington Nationals. This outing marked his second start since his Sept. 7 recall where he allowed only one earned run.

Despite the promising performance, Tong faces another winter of speculation regarding his readiness for a consistent spot in the major league rotation. The 23-year-old has had two stints with the Mets this season, pitching to a 3.82 earned run average in seven appearances. Last year, his ERA stood at 7.71 across five starts.

Tong is part of a group of homegrown starting pitchers, including Nolan McLean, Christian Scott, and Zac Thornton, who are considered well-positioned for roles in next year's rotation. However, manager Andy Green suggested before Tong's recent outing that the pitcher would likely begin the next season at Triple-A Syracuse.

"I think we have been forthright with him in like, ‘What does an organization desperately need to win a World Series?’" Green said. "You need guys that are sixth and seventh starters that start the year in Triple-A that can come up and dominate. You don’t win a World Series with only five starters.

"As an organization, you go out, you try to expand the group of starters you have, which pushes down people that feel like they’ve earned it. And in that case, his desires don’t perfectly align with what our desires would be because he wants to be here. So his job is to make it so freaking obvious to us that he deserves to be here that we can’t make those type of decisions when he competes in spring training."

The Mets also have Sean Manaea and Kodai Senga under contract for the upcoming season. Tylor Megill is expected to return after recovering from Tommy John surgery. The team may also pursue additional rotation reinforcements in the offseason. Senga, who spent a significant portion of the current season in the bullpen, could potentially be utilized in a relief role next year.

"Long term, I am a huge believer in Jonah," Green stated. "The context doesn’t always align for the player and what they want at that given point in time. But he’s going to be huge for us going forward."

Offensively, Ronny Mauricio contributed two home runs and three RBIs, while A.J. Ewing hit a three-run homer to lead the Mets' offense in the victory.
