Jon Venables Faces Parole Hearing Decades After Infamous Murder
Known as one of two 10-year-old boys who murdered James Bulger, Venables has lived under a new identity and is now eligible for release.
Jon Venables, who at the age of 10 was convicted of the brutal murder of two-year-old James Bulger, is facing a parole hearing. Venables, who has been held under a new identity and history within the prison system, is now eligible for release.
In 1993, Venables and his accomplice, Robert Thompson, abducted James Bulger from a shopping center in Merseyside, England. The two boys, also 10 years old, then tortured and killed the toddler. Their crime became one of the most shocking and publicized cases of the 20th century.
Following their conviction, Venables and Thompson were held in juvenile detention and released on license in 2001. However, Venables was recalled to prison in 2010 after he was found to have downloaded and distributed indecent images of children. At that time, he was 27 years old.
Throughout his time in the prison system, Venables has reportedly been held under a false name and a fabricated history. His legal representatives have stated that he has undergone rehabilitation, a claim that has been met with skepticism given his lifelong deception. The parole board's decision is anticipated to consider the totality of his actions and his claimed transformation.
