Jon Stewart has offered a provocative solution to curb President Donald Trump's perceived destructive tendencies: give him what he wants. Stewart suggested on his podcast, "The Weekly Show," that perhaps the reason Trump is "fucking our country up so bad is that we haven’t allowed him to etch his name on it."
Stewart elaborated on this satirical proposal, stating, "And maybe, if we just did that, if we just gave into it, he would take the metaphorical tarp down from the whole country and we could all flourish." He added that the government could always strip Trump's name from the "Trump United States of America" once he leaves office, and that "maybe he’d treat us a little better" if allowed to "make the coins" and "make the flags."
These comments come in the wake of Trump's administration attempting to rename the Kennedy Center and threatening its demolition after a federal judge blocked these efforts. The Trump administration argued the Kennedy Center could not survive without presidential assistance and thus deserved prominent recognition. A federal judge has since ordered the administration to provide a 30-day notice to the court for any proposed demolition.
Stewart also reflected on the constant media presence of Trump, comparing it to an "incessant, rhythmic" car alarm. He noted that other presidents did not dominate airwaves to the same extent, questioning the necessity of "another Trump TV" when the nation is already living "Trump TV."
