Jon Stewart, host of "The Daily Show," criticized former President Donald Trump for his actions following Spain's World Cup victory, accusing him of inserting himself into a moment meant for the athletes.
Stewart showed footage of the Spanish team celebrating with the World Cup trophy. Traditionally, this is a moment shared primarily among the players. However, Trump, who had assisted in presenting the trophy, remained on stage with the team after the ceremony.
"What the fuck are you doing on the stage? It’s for the players!" Stewart exclaimed during his Monday night monologue, questioning why the event had to be overshadowed by what he described as Trump's "overinflated ego."
Following the match, Trump had commented on the event's hosting by the U.S., stating, "I thought it was incredible. It was four times greater than any FIFA ever held." He then asked for clarification on the term "FIFA," before revising his assessment upward, saying, "And it’s probably about five times, actually, they’re telling me today."
Stewart responded to Trump's remarks by suggesting that those around the former president often lie to him because of his perceived personality traits. "You know they’re telling you that because everyone around you lies to you because you’re a little baby," Stewart said.
