Senator Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., has unreservedly rejected the rhetoric of Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, who suggested that American Jews could face violence due to their association with support for Israel. Ossoff, who is Jewish, stated through a spokesperson that such comments are "reckless and dangerous" and that no community should fear reprisal for speaking out.
Piker responded to the condemnation by accusing mainstream media and some politicians of a "crisis of credibility" and of being a "bought & sold political class." He suggested that organizations like AIPAC were driving the backlash against him.
Ossoff's statement aligns with a broader condemnation from multiple Democratic lawmakers, including Senators Cory Booker, D-N.J., and Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., as well as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y. These officials have denounced Piker's remarks, which included the assertion that "If Jews in America keep putting this idea out there that they are singularly invested in Israel, eventually someone is going to come around and take action, not against the state of Israel, mind you, but against American Jews."
Jeffries characterized Piker's claim as "dangerous and antisemitic," stating, "There is zero justification for threats against the safety of our Jewish brothers and sisters at this moment of rising hate."
Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, who had previously appeared with Piker, distanced his campaign from the streamer, asserting that "nobody speaks for this campaign besides me and my campaign spokespeople." He added, "I believe all Americans deserve the right to advocate for what they believe without fear of violence."
Piker, in turn, criticized the widespread calls for condemnation, framing it as a shift from discussing policy to focusing on critics of former President Trump and Israel. He argued that the "crisis of credibility for msm has been beneficial for me personally as an independent media personality." He also questioned the focus on him, stating, "in 3 years we went from 'do you condemn hamas' to 'do you condemn hasan' and israel is still a belligerent entity."
