Jon Gruden is reportedly set to return to the professional football fold as a play-by-play announcer for an NFL preseason game next month. This marks his first involvement in the sport since resigning as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders in October 2021.

Gruden's tenure with the Raiders ended after reports surfaced of emails he had sent containing racist, sexist, and homophobic language during his time as an ESPN analyst and "Monday Night Football" broadcaster. Following his departure, Gruden initiated a lawsuit against the NFL, alleging a "malicious and orchestrated campaign" led to the destruction of his career through the leaked emails.

In August, Gruden received a favorable ruling when the Nevada Supreme Court determined his case could proceed in court rather than arbitration. The NFL's petition to reconsider this decision was unanimously denied by the court in October.

While pursuing his legal battle and expressing a desire for a coaching comeback, Gruden has also been involved with Barstool Sports, conducting film study-style interviews with prospective quarterbacks. He has publicly stated his intention to coach again, regardless of the level, saying in July, "Hopefully I’m not done. I’m about to make a comeback."

Gruden, who led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl victory in 2003, has denied reports linking him to a role with the New York Jets, stating he has not received any offers from the team.
