Jon Gosselin Defends Son Collin's Memoir, Threatens Legal Action Against Ex-Wife Kate
The former reality TV star voiced pride in Collin's book and warned Kate against continuing to label their son as mentally ill.
Jon Gosselin has publicly defended his son Collin following the release of the 22-year-old's memoir, "In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood." Gosselin expressed pride in his son's work and issued a stern warning to his ex-wife, Kate Gosselin, against labeling Collin as mentally ill.
"First and foremost, I couldn't be more proud of my son’s heartbreaking memoir and his mission to help other victims of abuse," Jon Gosselin stated in a release to U.S. Weekly. He added, "Also, let me be very clear: If you continue to falsely label my son Collin as ‘mentally ill,’ you will be held accountable."
Gosselin emphasized that Collin has undergone evaluations by multiple independent psychiatrists, asserting that the narrative of him being mentally ill is "categorically untrue." He further cautioned that repeating such claims is "damaging to his reputation, his credibility and his future," concluding, "Consider this fair warning: The days of using mental health to discredit and silence my son are over."
Collin's memoir, released Tuesday, details allegations of abuse and mistreatment during his childhood. He claims his mother, Kate Gosselin, placed him in a mental institution in 2016 and visited him only once, allegedly telling him, "You broke our family." The memoir also alleges that Kate kept him confined in a "small holding" cell for two years before sending him to the institution, isolating him from his siblings.
Collin further claims that Kate forced him and his seven siblings to adhere to specific behaviors for their TLC show, "Jon and Kate Plus 8." He alleges that their mother had stringent expectations for them as toddlers and imposed severe punishments for minor infractions, such as getting dirt on their clothes.
Kate Gosselin responded to the memoir's release via a TikTok comment, suggesting that "rational logical [people] or anyone who has dealt with mental illness understands what’s going on here." She also reportedly "liked" a comment that described Collin's claims as "terrible lies" and suggested he was being "encouraged and enabled by other dysfunctional and mentally ill people."
Collin Gosselin has stated that he is considering legal action against his mother regarding the alleged abuse he endured, including the possibility of filing a police report. He told Page Six that he believes he has grounds for such action and stressed the importance of justice for children who have experienced similar mistreatment.
