Angelina Jolie is pushing back against Brad Pitt's efforts to obtain her tax returns for the three years following their separation, as their legal conflict over the French winery Château Miraval continues. Pitt, 62, has requested Jolie, 51, provide tax records and other financial documents spanning 2017 to 2019, which he argues are relevant based on statements she made.

Jolie's legal team contends that Pitt's request stems from a "continued mischaracterization and selective quoting" of her previous statements. Pitt has asserted that he invested significant time and resources into the winery and that Jolie breached their prior agreement by attempting to sell her share to Russian billionaire Yuri Shefler. Jolie, however, maintains she did not require Pitt's approval for the transaction and that his interpretation of her comments about achieving "financial independence" is taken out of context.

Jolie's representatives have clarified that her remarks were intended to express a desire to delineate her finances from Pitt's to separate herself from him, not an indication of general financial distress. Pitt's attorneys argue that such statements open her to scrutiny given the nature of the litigation. They contend that if Jolie had substantial income during the period in question, her financial records would contradict her claim of having no viable alternative business-wise but to sell her interest in the winery. Pitt's legal team highlighted Jolie's earning potential, noting her reported $33 million compensation for "Maleficent," which made her Forbes' highest-paid actress in a particular year. They stated that Jolie's allegations of lacking economic alternatives entitle them to probe the claim with evidence.

Jolie had offered to provide Pitt with access to her tax returns for 2020 and 2021. Pitt initially filed a lawsuit against Jolie in early 2022, alleging she sold her share of the estate to Shefler. The former couple, who share six children—Maddox, 24; Pax, 22; Zahara, 21; Shiloh, 19; and twins Vivienne and Knox, 17—split in 2016. Their divorce was finalized eight years later in December 2024, following multiple legal disputes. Pitt's legal team asserts that Jolie cannot claim he "economically cornered one of Hollywood's most successful actresses" without producing the necessary financial documents to support her assertion.
