Johnson: Democratic Leftward Shift Will Boost GOP Enthusiasm
House Speaker Mike Johnson predicts the Democratic Party's increasingly progressive agenda will galvanize Republican voters ahead of the midterm elections.
House Speaker Mike Johnson asserted that the Democratic Party's recent shift towards a more left-wing agenda will energize Republican voters and boost enthusiasm for the GOP in the upcoming midterm elections, despite current polling that suggests an advantage for Democrats.
"If these Democrats took control of Congress, it would be crazier than the Obama years and the Biden-Harris years, because they've taken a far lurch to the left," Johnson said during an appearance on "The Ingraham Angle." "And people see that, and I think it's going to juice enthusiasm for our side."
Johnson specifically criticized the policy stances of candidates affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), warning that proposals such as abolishing borders and prisons, and defunding police departments, pose dangers to the country. He characterized the current Democratic Party as significantly different from previous iterations, stating, "This is not our father's Democrat Party. This group is taking a far turn to the left."
He described the upcoming midterm elections as a "contrast election," where voters face a choice between "common sense" and what he termed "crazy." Johnson urged voters to consider which set of policies would best benefit their families, stating, "You have to vote Republican."
Johnson also cautioned against a Democratic takeover, predicting it would lead to retribution against former President Trump and his administration, the opening of borders, and the repeal of economic policies like the working families tax cut.
Johnson's remarks come amid polling data that shows Democrats leading Republicans. A Reuters Ipsos poll indicated that 47% of registered voters favored Democrats, compared to 36% for Republicans.
However, Johnson contended that polls do not accurately reflect the level of Republican enthusiasm, suggesting that Republican voters are increasingly hesitant to participate in surveys due to distrust. "The polls are grossly underestimating Republican enthusiasm around the country," he told Fox News host Laura Ingraham.
Johnson stated that his extensive travel across 21 states in the week leading up to the election has reinforced his confidence in Republican voter turnout. He believes the polls are inaccurate and do not capture the full picture of Republican engagement.
He warned that a Democratic majority in Congress would result in persistent political conflict, stating, "It will be chaos every day for two years in the next Congress. You have to keep Republicans in charge, and every single vote is going to count."
