John Travolta, 72, reappeared in a beret on Sunday at The Official Ramones 50th Anniversary Tribute held at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles. This marks his second public appearance in the hat since his style choices at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year generated considerable online commentary.
Travolta hosted the event, which honored the 50th anniversary of the Ramones' debut album. He was pictured on stage with Linda Ramone, the widow of the late Ramones guitarist Johnny Ramone. The actor completed his punk rock-inspired ensemble with a black leather motorcycle jacket, a Ramones T-shirt, black jeans, and sunglasses. IMAGE3
The event also served as a platform for Travolta to screen his latest directorial effort, "Propeller One-Way Night Coach," and the horror classic "Carrie." Travolta expressed his enthusiasm for returning to the Hollywood Forever Johnny Ramone Tribute, calling it a "blast."
"With showing something new, my directorial debut, Propeller One-Way Night Coach. And something old, the 50th anniversary of original Carrie. It is going to be a fun night," Travolta said in a news release. The tribute also featured performances by the supergroup Cretin Family, comprising Billie Joe Armstrong, Travis Barker, Tim Armstrong, and CJ Ramone, as well as a performance by rock icon Billy Idol.
Travolta previously addressed the online reactions to his beret-wearing at the Cannes Film Festival in May. He explained to CNN that his choice was an homage to "old school directors" and filmmakers known for wearing berets and distinctive eyewear. IMAGE4
"The old school directors wore berets and the glasses. And I thought, that's what I'm doing," Travolta stated, referencing his role as a director for "Propeller One-Way Night Coach." He added that the distinctive look served as a personal marker for events, helping him distinguish between different experiences over his long career.
"I'm a director this time. You're an actor, play the part of a director. Look like an old school director," he said, detailing how he consulted images of famous filmmakers for inspiration. He also noted that the look would help him recall specific career moments, such as directing his film or winning the Palme d'Or.
Travolta's beret streak began during his flight to Cannes with his daughter Ella Bleu. IMAGE2 He later appeared in a beige beret and a dyed beard on the red carpet, and subsequently wore a black beret with spectacles at a photocall for "Propeller One-Way Night Coach." IMAGE5 IMAGE6
His appearances at Cannes drew varied online reactions, with some users questioning his appearance while others praised his new look. Travolta was later presented with an honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes for his directorial debut.
"Propeller One-Way Night Coach" is based on Travolta's 1997 children's book of the same name, which was inspired by his childhood fascination with aviation and memories of planes taking off from LaGuardia Airport.
