John Stamos Shares Health Update on Beach Boys' Mike Love

John Stamos has shared a heartfelt update on the health of his longtime friend and Beach Boys legend Mike Love, revealing the 85-year-old music icon is facing "serious health challenges." Stamos, 63, posted on Instagram Sunday that he was traveling to Nashville to perform with Love at the Ryman Auditorium, noting that the singer "insists on being on stage" despite his ongoing health concerns.

Doctors, family, and friends have urged Love to prioritize his health, but the musician believes his band and fans are essential for his well-being. "He says he needs his band, the audience, his friends and drummer surrounding him to lift him up," Stamos wrote.

This comes after the Beach Boys played their first public concert in three months on Saturday in Cincinnati. During the show, an apparently frail Love sat in a chair on stage for the entire performance. Stamos shared photos of himself and Love, expressing his difficulty in putting his feelings into words. "My beloved friend, father figure, musical hero and mentor, Mike Love, is facing serious health challenges," he wrote. "We hope he’ll be doing what he loves for years to come, but we don’t know what the future holds. We have tonight."

Stamos, who has performed with Love for 41 years, reflected on the emotional impact of seeing his hero face such vulnerability. "I’ve never imagined how deeply it would affect me to see someone larger than life face something so human and fragile," he said. He cautioned that the Love fans would see on stage might not be exactly as they remembered, but emphasized, "he’s still every bit the Mike we love."

He recalled Love officiating his wedding to Caitlin McHugh and highlighted the deep personal connection they share. "Forty-one years of stages, airplanes, hotel rooms, laughter and moments nobody else saw. He married Caitlin and me. He’s shared experiences with my family, and now my son. Mike didn’t just give me a place in his band. He gave me a place in his life. He taught me how to entertain, hold a stage, connect with an audience and make people feel something. I carry those lessons everywhere. He’s made me a better musician, entertainer and man."

Stamos expressed his commitment to being fully present during their performance in Nashville. "Tonight, at the Ryman, sharing the stage with Mike, I want to be completely present. Hear every harmony, familiar joke and cheer. Feel that first chord hit and watch age, illness and time disappear. Just a bunch of guys making music together. Maybe the hardest part of loving someone is becoming so accustomed to the miracle of having them there that you forget it’s a miracle at all. Tonight, I won’t forget. I want to cherish every second without feeling those seconds slipping away. That’s what I’m giving him. We don’t know what tomorrow brings. But we have tonight."

The exact nature of Love's health issues remains unclear. Last year, Love spoke about recovering from bronchitis and COVID-19, which, combined with the loss of his sister, had taken an emotional and physical toll. In July, the Beach Boys canceled the remainder of their shows through September, citing a need to "recharge," though their September dates were later canceled without explanation.

In June, Love performed from a chair during a private show at the Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach hotel in Dana Point, California. The band's next scheduled performances after the Ryman Auditorium show are on November 11 at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and November 13 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Bristol, Virginia.

Love and Al Jardine are the last surviving original members of the Beach Boys, founded in 1961 by Love and Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, along with Jardine.
