John Oliver, host of HBO's "Last Week Tonight," is set to make his debut on two prominent soap operas: "General Hospital" and "Days of Our Lives." The comedian revealed the news over the weekend, calling the roles a "huge honor."
Oliver, 49, has already taped a week's worth of episodes for "Days of Our Lives" and described his "General Hospital" experience as "everything [he] hoped it would be." He quipped that he is "a small stain on the history of this illustrious show" and noted his appearance alongside soap opera veterans and guest stars like Dick Van Dyke and Betty White.
Despite this foray into daytime drama, Oliver clarified that guest-starring in soap operas is not his "Plan B." He explained that he had publicly offered his hypothetical acting abilities to any soap opera willing to meet his terms: playing a character with a ridiculous name, a juicy storyline involving murder or slapping, and a dramatic close-up of his face.
Oliver first put out feelers for a soap opera role in a March episode of "Last Week Tonight," inspired by sports commentator Stephen A. Smith's recurring role on "General Hospital" as Brick. Smith subsequently engaged with Oliver on Instagram, questioning his readiness to commit to a "bad guy" persona, complete with a scowl and a willingness to be disliked.
Frank Valentini, executive producer of "General Hospital," told Variety that he "didn’t hesitate for a second" to cast Oliver after seeing his public plea. Valentini praised Oliver's professionalism, preparedness, and kindness on set, noting that his character will play an integral part in the ongoing story.
Oliver's appearances on "General Hospital" are scheduled for July 2, 3, and 6. His "Days of Our Lives" debut will take place on August 11, 12, and 14.
