Liberal late-night host John Oliver targeted Fox News anchor Jesse Watters on his HBO show "Last Week Tonight," referencing Watters' 2019 divorce and a past affair, and questioning claims of vandalism to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
Oliver, during Sunday's episode, brought up Watters' divorce from his first wife, Noelle Inguagiato, which followed revelations that Watters had an affair with a then-25-year-old Fox News associate producer, Emma DiGiovine. Oliver noted that Watters' divorce was finalized a year after the affair began and that he subsequently married DiGiovine, with whom he now has two children.
"Maybe those people at the reflecting pool dropped their wedding ring after leaving their wife for a 25-year-old coworker. Jesse would know what that is like!" Oliver quipped, referencing a segment on "Jesse Watters Primetime" that sought to find evidence of vandalism to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
Watters' show had featured footage of individuals with their hands in the pool, with Watters suggesting they might be damaging its lining. The claims of vandalism originated from former President Donald Trump, who alleged that "thugs" had damaged the pool with blades. The National Park Service later filed court documents detailing damage, including a "350-foot gash" in the pool's liner, sustained on June 9.
Oliver dismissed the evidence presented by Watters as "laughably weak," citing expert opinions that the liner would be difficult to cut and that repairs might have been done hastily. He also criticized the Trump administration's renovation of the Reflecting Pool, calling it a "trainwreck."
Oliver also touched upon another detail from Watters' Wikipedia page, where Watters stated he had not been invited to his mother’s home for Thanksgiving in November 2024. Oliver commented on Watters' mother being a child psychologist and suggested she had "tried her best" with her son, adding, "Sometimes you just get one that sucks!"
Trump has previously criticized Oliver's show, calling it "boring" and "a waste of time."
