John Murtough Appointed Birmingham City Director of Football
Former Manchester United executive joins ambitious Championship club with Premier League aspirations.
John Murtough has been appointed as the new director of football at Birmingham City, marking his first role in English football since departing Manchester United. Murtough leaves Italian club Atalanta to join the Championship side, which has stated ambitions for promotion to the Premier League.
Murtough brings nearly three decades of experience in elite football, having previously held senior positions at Manchester United, Everton, Fulham, and Coventry City. His responsibilities at Birmingham will encompass men's football strategy, recruitment, and squad development, working in collaboration with the first-team and recruitment departments. He is also tasked with strengthening the connection between the club's academy and the senior team to foster a unified football philosophy.
Birmingham's US-based owners, Knighthead, are reportedly planning a significant investment in a new stadium as part of a larger "Sports Quarter" development. This project aims to include a 62,000-seat stadium, with Premier League football identified as a key objective for the club's future.
Birmingham City is currently fourth in the Championship standings, having secured five wins and five draws in their opening 11 matches. Winger Liam Millar, on loan at Birmingham, recently drew comparisons between the current team and Hull City's promotion-winning squad from the previous season, expressing optimism about the club's prospects.
