Tennis broadcaster John McEnroe faced criticism from fans who felt his comments immediately following Alexander Zverev's U.S. Open victory were inappropriate and diminished the champion's achievement. As Zverev secured his second Grand Slam title of the year, McEnroe, alongside play-by-play announcer Chris Fowler, mentioned top players Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, urging them to "get healthy."

Fans took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express their dismay. One user called the commentary "incredibly distracting" and "blatantly biased." Another suggested McEnroe "definitely doesn’t like Zverev." Several commentators felt the timing was wrong, with one stating, "This should be the final straw for John McEnroe. Unprofessional, belittling the sport and stealing the spotlight from the champion and runner up seconds after victory."

Zverev defeated Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-2 to win the title at Arthur Ashe Stadium. This marks Zverev's second Grand Slam title of 2026, having previously won the French Open. McEnroe's remarks alluded to the fact that Zverev has avoided facing Alcaraz and Sinner in his recent major tournament victories.

Alcaraz was sidelined for several months due to a wrist injury, missing the French Open. Sinner withdrew from the U.S. Open with a knee injury. However, Sinner did win Wimbledon earlier in the year, defeating a strong performance from Zverev in the final. Despite these absences, Zverev has capitalized on opportunities, positioning himself for a potential world No. 1 ranking.

Meanwhile, World No. 1 Sinner has announced he will defend his title at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna in October. Sinner also holds titles at the China Open, Paris Masters, and the ATP Finals. He has maintained his top ranking for 22 weeks, holding a significant points lead over Zverev in the official ATP rankings.
