The John Lewis Partnership announced plans to create 10,400 temporary jobs across the United Kingdom in anticipation of the upcoming holiday season. The recruitment drive includes 6,000 positions within Waitrose's 320 branches and 2,600 roles across John Lewis's 36 shops. An additional 1,800 jobs will support the retailer's distribution centers and supply chain operations.
The Partnership aims to recruit individuals from diverse age groups and backgrounds, noting that the seasonal roles are particularly popular among younger candidates. Historically, approximately three-quarters of seasonal hires have been under the age of 25. These positions are seen as an opportunity for young people to gain workplace experience and begin careers in retail, especially as one million young people in the UK are currently not in education, employment, or training (NEET).
Helen Webb, chief people officer for the John Lewis Partnership, stated that the roles are open to people of all ages and backgrounds. She highlighted the company's commitment to providing meaningful opportunities for young people, recognizing that youth unemployment remains a significant challenge. Webb described the seasonal roles as more than just temporary employment, emphasizing their potential to build confidence and serve as a catalyst for long-term careers.
This hiring initiative follows substantial investments in the company, with over £1 billion allocated to Waitrose and £800 million to John Lewis.
Support for Young People
As part of its commitment to supporting young individuals entering the workforce, the Partnership plans to hire 100 young people from the care system through its Building Happier Futures program. This initiative builds on a previous commitment to recruit 1,000 care-experienced individuals by 2030, a target that more than doubled its original goal due to the significant barriers this group often faces in finding employment. To further assist these individuals, the company will offer 300 welcome visits and 250 job-shadowing placements between now and December. Every young person who completes a job-shadowing placement will receive a guaranteed interview.
Seasonal shop positions will become available on jlpjobs.com/Christmas this month, with options for candidates to register interest and sign up for job alerts. Individuals interested in the Building Happier Futures employability program can contact [email protected] for more information and upcoming dates.
Pay for these seasonal roles starts at £13 per hour, or £14.55 in London, increasing to £13.25 and £14.80 respectively after 30 days of employment. Successful candidates will receive competitive salaries, training, and flexible working options.
