John Lennon's Spanish Retreat: Almeria's Enduring Allure
The coastal city that inspired The Beatles' songwriter is experiencing a resurgence as a cultural and tourist destination.
Almeria, a sun-drenched city on Spain's southeastern coast, is drawing renewed attention for its unique blend of cinematic history and vibrant cultural scene, approximately 60 years after The Beatles' John Lennon penned some of his most famous works there.
Nestled between Europe's only desert, the Tabernas Desert, and the Mediterranean Sea, Almeria was once known as the 'Costa del Hollywood' during the 1950s and 1960s. This era saw numerous spaghetti Westerns filmed in the surrounding desert, featuring stars like Clint Eastwood. It was during this period that John Lennon arrived in 1966 to film the black comedy 'How I Won The War,' accompanied by his wife, Cynthia.
Cynthia Lennon later recalled Almeria during that time as a deeply traditional city, a stark contrast to its modern iteration. Today, the city center, characterized by pastel-hued buildings, has evolved into a hub for art and creativity. The autumn season offers pleasant temperatures, hovering around 20C (68F), making it ideal for outdoor dining and exploration.
Cultural attractions include the new Art Museum of Almeria, which showcases contemporary local artists, and the MuReC, dedicated to the contemporary realism movement. For a glimpse into the past, the 11th-century Barrio Andalusi archaeological site offers a historical perspective.
The Aire Hotel and Ancient Baths, a stylish accommodation, features Roman-style baths and a rooftop plunge pool, providing a tranquil retreat. A bronze statue of Lennon, guitar in hand, in Plaza de las Flores serves as a reminder of his time there. It was during his stay that Lennon adopted his signature short hair and granny glasses. His former villa is now a popular film museum.
Lennon was joined for a period by Ringo Starr and his first wife Maureen, and they were reportedly captivated by a performance from local flamenco guitarist Pepe Richoly. The tradition of flamenco music continues to thrive, particularly in the old fishing quarter, La Pescaderia, where intimate venues host performances.
