John Harbaugh, the newly appointed head coach of the New York Giants, is set to experience the storied Giants-Cowboys rivalry for the first time in his NFL coaching career. This marks Harbaugh's 19th season opener, but his inaugural game with the Giants, as they face off against their division rivals on Sunday night.

Harbaugh, who previously led the Baltimore Ravens to a Super Bowl victory and 12 playoff appearances over 18 seasons, arrives in New York with a significant contract and the mandate to restore the Giants to past glories. The franchise has struggled in recent years, enduring 10 seasons with double-digit losses in the 14 seasons since their last Super Bowl triumph. Harbaugh is the sixth head coach to attempt to steer the team back to success in that span.

"It feels like a big game, an opening game that we have against a division team," Harbaugh stated. "And I’m excited about it."

He acknowledged the weight of the rivalry, noting, "It’s going to be the first time—like some of the other guys on the team, too, and some of the other coaches to be in that stadium for a regular season game. I can’t wait to see it. I can’t wait to be a part of it."

The Giants face a formidable historical trend in their Week 1 matchups against Dallas. The Cowboys have won 10 of the previous 11 season openers between the two teams. Dallas has also claimed the last three Week 1 contests, with scores of 19-3 in 2017, 35-17 in 2019, and a decisive 40-0 in 2023.

This upcoming game is one of four nationally televised prime-time appearances for the Giants this season, a notable increase given the team's 7-27 record over the past two seasons. This increased exposure suggests a belief in Harbaugh's potential to improve the team's performance and make them a more compelling watch.

Harbaugh reflected on the journey to this point, saying, "It feels like it’s taken forever to get here, and it feels like it happened just like that at the same time." He added, "Yet, they’ve worked really hard. We all have. There’s been a lot of water under the bridge to get us to this point."

He anticipates the emotional significance of his debut with the Giants, particularly in such a high-profile divisional rivalry. "I don’t think I’m going to lose control and start sobbing on the sidelines or anything like that," Harbaugh said. "I think it’s going to be meaningful."
