New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh has opened his tenure with the team by emphasizing energy and intensity at the start of training camp. After 18 years as the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, Harbaugh, 63, signed a five-year, $100 million contract with the Giants, aiming to reverse the team's fortunes.
This year's training camp marks a unique start as ongoing renovations at the Giants' facility in East Rutherford, New Jersey, have prompted the team to relocate to The Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. The renovations were planned prior to Harbaugh's hiring.
Upon arriving at the resort, Harbaugh noted the presence of Giants' colors and logos, a moment he described as "pretty cool." He observed that once practice begins, the focus shifts to work, but the drive into the facility provided a palpable sense of the team's identity.
The first practice session, a 90-minute high-energy workout, adhered to NFL Players Association guidelines for non-padded drills at the start of camp. Harbaugh expressed satisfaction with the team's initial performance, noting their focus and determination.
"I was really happy with it," Harbaugh said. "I thought we were on point. There was determination. Nobody was happy-go-lucky coming in. Everybody was in good spirits. But more than that, they were focused and determined to get off to a good start."
The opening team meeting featured the West Virginia anthem, John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads," with many players joining in the singing. Player Brian Burns described Harbaugh's demeanor as characterized by "enthusiasm" and "intensity," noting the coach's clear expectations for professionalism and hard work.
"He makes it very clear what he expects," Burns said. "He expects you to work. He expects you to be a pro, show up on time, prepared. He’s not a man for excuses. He understands stuff happens, but he ain’t trying to give too much of that."
As camp progresses, the focus is expected to shift from initial enthusiasm to rigorous preparation and competition.
