John Goodman Sheds 200 Pounds, Appears at Premiere for New Film 'Digger'
The 74-year-old actor, who has been open about his past struggles with alcohol addiction, showcased his significant weight loss at the Los Angeles premiere of his latest project.
John Goodman, 74, recently made a notable public appearance alongside his wife, Anna Beth, at the Los Angeles premiere of his new film, "Digger." The event marked a moment for Goodman to display the results of his substantial weight loss, having shed 200 pounds over the years.
Goodman, who has spoken candidly about battling a three-decade-long alcohol addiction, appeared on the red carpet looking notably slimmer. He and Anna Beth, married since 1989, posed together at the premiere of the dark satirical comedy-drama directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu. Goodman stars in the film as President Compson, the political counterweight to Tom Cruise's character, Digger Rockwell, an eccentric oil magnate whose actions contribute to an environmental disaster.
The actor's transformation is a significant departure from his appearance during the height of his fame, particularly for his role as Dan Conner in the sitcom "Roseanne." At his largest, Goodman weighed approximately 400 pounds, a figure that was often a subject of discussion and even incorporated into storylines.
Following his decision to stop drinking in 2007, Goodman embarked on a journey to lose weight. By 2010, he had lost 100 pounds, attributing this initial success to cutting sugar from his diet and adhering to a rigorous exercise regimen with trainer Mackie Shilstone. Shilstone implemented a Mediterranean-style eating plan and a daily exercise routine that included treadmill and elliptical work, aiming for 10,000 to 12,000 steps per day.
Goodman himself described his past heavier state as a "waste" and acknowledged the significant energy it took to focus on eating. Shilstone noted that Goodman's memory of being extremely heavy serves as a strong motivator to avoid regaining the weight.
In more recent years, Goodman continued his weight management efforts. By 2023, he announced a total weight loss of 200 pounds. While his exercise routine evolved, incorporating lower-intensity activities like walking his dogs, he has also spoken about the challenges of maintaining momentum, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted his previous boxing regimen.
Despite the challenges, Goodman remains active in his career with several projects in various stages of completion. He is involved in the podcast drama "Hindsight: The Day Before," voicing Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, and has upcoming roles in the films "The Hollywood Hitman" and the horror movie "Skeletons."
