John Goodman Discusses Struggles with Weight, Alcohol, and Eating 'Alcoholically'

Actor John Goodman, known for his role on "Roseanne," has detailed his past struggles with significant weight gain, alcohol dependency, and a pattern of "eating alcoholically." At one point weighing close to 400 pounds, Goodman described a cycle of unhealthy habits that he eventually confronted in his mid-50s.

Goodman explained that his struggles with overeating and drinking were linked to a desire to fill an internal void. "I would overeat, because that was comfort. Trying to fill up whatever hole that was. Same thing for drinking," he told The New Yorker. He characterized this behavior as an attempt to find gratification that ultimately led to negative consequences.

His journey with addiction began in his early acting career. After moving to New York City in 1975, Goodman found financial stability through acting gigs, which provided him with the means to start drinking. He initially found camaraderie in Broadway bars, but his lifestyle soon contributed to significant weight gain, which he felt pigeonholed him in Hollywood.

The role of Dan Conner on "Roseanne" brought him fame, but also intensified the pressure. By the final season of the original "Roseanne" run, Goodman described his experience as a "misery tour with alcohol," noting he felt like a "38-year-old depressive alcoholic." He grappled with guilt, anxiety, and the fear of public judgment, compounded by the secrecy surrounding his dependence on alcohol.

The turning point came in 2007, when, at 55, Goodman achieved sobriety. He described the decision as being driven by a profound exhaustion with his lifestyle: "I got sick and tired of being sick and tired." He acknowledged the severe medical risks associated with alcohol withdrawal and the necessity of medical supervision for long-term heavy drinkers.

Even after quitting drinking, Goodman continued to struggle with food, describing his eating habits as "eating alcoholically." This continued pattern led to his weight reaching nearly 400 pounds. To address this, he underwent a stomach operation. He also noted experiencing anemia and a loss of subcutaneous fat, which leaves him feeling cold.

Weight loss surgeries can sometimes lead to complications such as iron deficiency anemia, affecting a significant percentage of patients. Procedures like gastric bypass can impair iron absorption due to reduced stomach acid or by bypassing the small intestine, where most iron is absorbed. The loss of body fat also diminishes insulation, making individuals more susceptible to cold temperatures.

Goodman reported in 2023 that he has lost approximately 200 pounds since his peak weight. This significant transformation marks the culmination of his efforts to regain control of his health and well-being.![John Goodman attends the premiere of
