John Goodman Details Weight Loss Journey, Sobriety Struggles
The actor discussed his battle with alcoholism and stomach surgery in a recent interview.
Actor John Goodman has spoken candidly about the challenges that led to his significant weight loss, detailing a period where he was "eating alcoholically" and underwent stomach surgery. Goodman, 74, shared in a recent interview with The New Yorker that he achieved sobriety in his 50s but had been actively managing his weight prior to quitting alcohol.
He described a cycle of losing and regaining substantial weight, stating, "I’d lose sixty pounds in a summer, gain it all back. Seventy pounds, eighty pounds. And that got tiring." At his heaviest, Goodman approached 400 pounds. "I was eating alcoholically after I stopped drinking," he admitted.
To address his health, Goodman pursued surgical intervention with "an operation on my stomach." He also noted experiencing anemia and a loss of subcutaneous fat as a result of his health efforts.
Goodman's struggles with alcohol began in 1978, which he attributed to newfound freedom after a relationship ended. What started as occasional visits to bars evolved into a habit, contributing to rapid weight gain. He recalled frequenting a particular bar, Café Central, which became a regular haunt where he sought social connection and laughter, but also developed a dependence on drinking.
"There’s a saying in the rooms: I got sick and tired of being sick and tired," Goodman said, referencing his decision to get sober. He described the allure of instant gratification and the subsequent vicious cycle of hangovers, shakes, and the need to drink to alleviate withdrawal symptoms. He stated that at the time he decided to quit, he was facing a situation that would have required hospitalization regardless of his choice.
Goodman expressed fatigue with his lifestyle and a desire for it to cease. He recognized how his drinking contributed to selfishness and delayed his personal maturity. "I was overlooking real life," he reflected, "And it was great to see there was a life where I didn’t have to use anything to enjoy it."
In previous discussions about his weight loss, Goodman mentioned incorporating boxing and daily walks into his routine. He described engaging in approximately an hour to an hour and a half of boxing exercises, including hitting mitts and bags and practicing footwork. While he enjoyed the activity, he noted he never felt skilled enough to spar, fearing a physical blow might cause him to lose control.
Goodman gained widespread recognition for his role as Dan Conner in the original run of the sitcom "Roseanne." He later reprised the character in the 2018 revival and the subsequent spin-off series, "The Conners."
