John Goodman Debuts Dramatic 200lb Weight Loss at Premiere

John Goodman, 74, appeared alongside his wife Anna Beth at the Los Angeles premiere of his new film, 'Digger,' on Monday evening. The actor displayed the results of his substantial weight loss, having shed approximately 200 pounds after a long-term struggle with alcohol addiction.
Goodman, who has been open about his battle with alcoholism for decades, began his weight loss journey after entering rehab in 2007. He has previously shared that at his heaviest, he weighed around 400 pounds. By 2010, he had lost 100 pounds through dietary changes and a rigorous exercise regimen, including working out six days a week with trainer Mackie Shilstone. Shilstone implemented a Mediterranean-style eating plan and encouraged daily step goals, utilizing a treadmill and elliptical.
In 'Digger,' directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, Goodman plays President Compson, the political counterpart to Tom Cruise's character, Digger Rockwell, an eccentric oil magnate. Rockwell's actions have led to an environmental disaster, and he then attempts to position himself as humanity's savior.
Goodman's appearance marks a significant visual departure from his earlier career, particularly his beloved role as Dan Conner in "Roseanne." His weight was often a subject of discussion and sometimes integrated into plotlines. Following his decision to stop drinking in 2007, he embarked on a sustained effort to manage his weight. He has spoken about the importance of portion control, a stark contrast to his previous eating habits. Despite periods where his routine has lapsed, as mentioned in a 2023 Rolling Stone interview where he noted a lack of exercise due to work and a return to low-intensity activities like dog walking, his commitment to maintaining his health remains evident.
He also spoke about the debilitating nature of his addiction, stating in an interview with The Guardian that it was "life or death" and had taken a toll on those around him.
