John Cleese Mocks UK Counter-Radicalization Referral Over Islam Comments

Comedian John Cleese has responded with amusement to reports that a complaint was filed with Britain’s counter-radicalization program, Prevent, over his online remarks concerning Islam. The referral, which does not imply any criminal charges, was reportedly made due to a “sustained pattern” of posts that activists claim “demonizes, dehumanizes, and collectively attributes violence and criminality to Muslims and Islam.”

Cleese, 86, known for his work with Monty Python, stated, "How exciting," upon learning of the referral. He further commented that the situation provides “All good comedy material. For those with a sense of humor.”

The complaint, initially reported by Muslim-focused outlet 5Pillars, cited several of Cleese's posts, including one from July 18 that allegedly described Islam as “the religion of pedophiles.” Other posts referenced in the complaint include one from March 31 where Cleese referred to a culture whose holy book advocates violence against those who disagree, and an April post characterizing a religious practice as a "barbaric custom" prevalent in "about 60 Muslim countries."

The complainant reportedly assessed Cleese's rhetoric as meeting "several indicators used in PREVENT risk assessments for anti-Muslim hate and counter-extremism concerns," warning of potential contributions to “radicalization, communal tension, and hate incidents” with a risk level deemed "moderate to high."

Cleese has previously characterized himself as an "Islamosceptic" rather than Islamophobic, arguing that Islam should be subject to ridicule, similar to how Christianity was satirized in the 1979 Monty Python film "Life of Brian." He has stated that criticism of Islam is "culturalist" and not racist, citing practices like female genital mutilation as examples. In February, he asserted that "traditional British values are under attack from Muslim belief systems," and in March, he wrote that the "Koran’s teaching is ALL about acquiring power, killing ‘infidels’ and imposing Islam on everyone."

The Prevent program is a UK government initiative designed to assess individuals who may be vulnerable to radicalization or involvement in terrorism. Referrals to Prevent are evaluated to determine if intervention is necessary. This process can result in cases being closed without further action, or individuals being referred to Channel, a voluntary intervention program. There is no public indication that Cleese has been placed in Channel or is subject to a criminal investigation.
