John Carlson's Wife Sparks Controversy with Capitals Fan Base Over Trade Comments

The wife of longtime Capitals defenseman John Carlson, Gina Nucci Carlson, engaged in a public feud with Washington fans on social media following her husband's midseason trade to the Anaheim Ducks last season. The dispute was sparked by comments she made about disliking the color red, a color prominently associated with the Capitals.

In a series of Instagram Stories, Gina Nucci Carlson defended her remarks, stating that her comment about not liking red was intended as a joke and was not meant to offend fans or the team. She also shared a particularly harsh direct message she received from a user who called her an offensive name.

"I said I don’t like the color red. It was a joke and I won’t say sorry for that — but for the Caps fans who have been wonderful to me. It wasn’t meant to offend you and the team you cheer for," she wrote, according to a Reddit post referencing her Instagram activity. She added, "DC is my home. I’m not going to defend myself bc I said I don’t like the color red. This is my page and a place for me to put my opinions. John had an incredible career in Washington. If you think his wife saying she doesn’t like red is disrespectful to that. That’s your problem. He didn’t have a problem with my opinion on the color red."

Nucci Carlson further elaborated on the trade itself, suggesting that the circumstances of her husband's departure from the Capitals were more complex than a simple transaction. "Do I wish things ended better with an organization my husband spent 17 years with? Yes. I do. It broke me that it didn’t. He did not simply just get traded. There was much more to it & I will end it there. I loved my husbands career in DC," she stated.

John Carlson, a 36-year-old defenseman, spent the entirety of his 1,143-game NHL career with the Capitals before being traded. He later signed a two-year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning in free agency.

Carlson himself had previously described the way he learned of his trade as unusual. He told the Associated Press that he was informed by his cousin, a farmer, in the middle of the night, calling the timing "a little wacky."

"In the middle of the night is not the best way to find out some very altering news like that," Carlson said in March. "It’s been a crazy day with my family. Packing, getting ready, saying goodbyes. It’s an exciting time, certainly … but there was a lot that went into the day as well that I’d never had to deal with. That’s part of life. That’s part of this league. I’ve been lucky not to have to do too many of these things."

Carlson joined the Capitals in 2009 and was part of the team that won the Stanley Cup in 2018.
