John Calipari Admits He Was Too Intimidated to Speak to Taylor Swift at NBA Finals

Arkansas men's college basketball coach John Calipari revealed he was too intimidated to approach pop superstar Taylor Swift during Game 4 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden. Calipari shared the anecdote on the "Eye on College Basketball" podcast, recounting how he feigned using his phone to avoid an interaction.

Calipari was seated in the celebrity section of the arena, an area he described as a "dugout" where notable figures mingled. He noted Swift's presence alongside actors Adam Sandler and his wife, Jackie. While Calipari felt comfortable greeting other celebrities like Chris Rock, he felt too nervous to approach Swift.

"Normally I take a picture, and then I send it to my daughters and stuff. I was intimidated," Calipari said on the podcast. "She was talking to whoever she was talking to, Adam Sandler and his wife... But she walked up. And what I did was this. I took my phone, and I acted like I was on my phone. I wasn’t on my phone, but I acted like I was… intimidated."

Calipari also joked about not being invited to Swift's July 3 wedding to Travis Kelce, which was reportedly officiated by Adam Sandler at Madison Square Garden.

Swift was in attendance for Game 4 of the NBA Finals, which saw the Knicks overcome a 29-point deficit, the largest in NBA Finals history, to secure a 107-106 victory. OG Anunoby's tip-in with 1.2 seconds remaining sealed the win for New York. Swift was reportedly joined by singers Este and Alana Haim, celebrating the Knicks' historic comeback. The Knicks ultimately won the series in five games, their first NBA championship in 53 years.

Calipari later posted on social media about the experience, stating, "I got to spend some time with all the Knicks Alums, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock but I was too nervous to introduce myself to Taylor Swift! LOL!"
