John Boyega Reflects on Friendship with Damilola Taylor, Inspiring Poem

Actor John Boyega is honoring the memory of his childhood friend, Damilola Taylor, who was fatally stabbed in 2000. Boyega, who was one of the last people to see Taylor alive, spoke about his friend's enduring legacy in a new BBC documentary, "Damilola: The Untold Story."

Taylor, who moved from Nigeria to London a few months before his death, befriended Boyega at Oliver Goldsmith Primary School. Both boys' families were of Yoruba descent. At the age of ten, Taylor was killed on his way home from the library, stabbed in the leg with a broken beer bottle by two boys aged 12 and 13.

Boyega, who was eight at the time of Taylor's death, shared a poem written by his friend, which they used to recite together. The poem expressed ambition and a desire to make a global impact: "I will travel far and wide to choose my destiny and remould the world; I know it is my destiny to defend the world, which I hope to achieve in my lifetime."

Speaking in the documentary, Boyega highlighted how Taylor's forward-looking perspective has influenced his own career. "Damilola's legacy to me means being able to be unrealistic with your dreams," Boyega stated. He described Taylor as someone who was not deterred by his environment, but rather focused on his future aspirations. "He didn't listen to the fear, he didn't. From that poem, he had plans and he honestly came across as if he didn't care about the environment that he was. He was more so fixated on where he was going. So what's my excuse?"

Boyega also reflected on the pervasive fear of violence in their Peckham neighborhood during their childhood. He recalled the constant anxiety of potentially becoming a victim of stabbing, a reality that tragically befell his friend.

At a BAFTA event in London, Boyega, alongside his sister Grace, who also knew Taylor, discussed the impact of Damilola's killing and other incidents of youth violence in the area. He emphasized that he and his sister were directly affected and had narrowly avoided similar fates themselves.

The documentary explores the final hours of Damilola's life and the profound impact his death had on his friends and family. It also examines the environment in Peckham in 2000, the rise in knife crime, and the subsequent investigation, which eventually led to the manslaughter convictions of Ricky and Danny Preddie in 2006.

Boyega mentioned that he was motivated to speak publicly about Taylor's death following the passing of Damilola's father, Richard Taylor, earlier in 2024. Richard Taylor had dedicated years to supporting disadvantaged children and campaigning against knife crime through the Damilola Taylor Trust he established with his wife, Gloria.

"Damilola: The Untold Story" aims to tell Taylor's story from the perspective of the young people who lived through the events, highlighting the pressures of fear and bullying and how these influenced choices. The film seeks to honor Damilola's memory by sharing the experiences of those who knew him best.
