Comedian John Bishop has broken his ankle in a motorbike accident and will be unable to participate in a charity bike ride this Sunday with Olympic cyclist Sir Chris Hoy. Bishop, 59, sustained the injury while riding with astronaut Tim Peake.
In a video shared on Instagram, Bishop explained his situation, showing his injured right ankle in a leg brace. "Unfortunately, I won't be there. I won't be able to wear this shirt this year because of this," he stated, referring to a shirt for Prostate Cancer UK.
He recounted the accident, saying, "I went out for a motorbike ride today with Tim Peake, who's a brilliant lad and a great motorcyclist." Bishop added, "I learnt a lesson today – astronauts are better motorcyclists than comedians, and so it looks like I've broken my ankle, which means, unfortunately, I can't do the ride."
Despite his absence, Bishop urged continued support for Prostate Cancer UK and Sir Chris Hoy's ride. "Please continue supporting Prostate Cancer UK and supporting Sir Chris Hoy on his ride on Sunday," he said. He concluded, "Gutted to miss it."
Bishop, who was looking forward to taking part to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer research, shared that he would be cheering on the participants remotely. Sir Chris Hoy, who is undergoing treatment for stage four prostate cancer, expressed his well wishes, writing, "Heal fast mate! So sorry we won't get to see you but there's always next year!"
Tim Peake also commented, expressing his disappointment for Bishop, stating, "Gutted for you mate, you were a rockstar but so sorry you're missing out on this. 'Til the next time!!"
Fans also offered their support, wishing Bishop a speedy recovery and encouraging him to get back on the bike when healed.
Bishop began motorcycling in 2023 after his late father-in-law gifted him a scooter.
