Joey Porter Jr. Felt Disrespected by Steelers, Valued More by Cowboys

Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. stated that he felt "disrespected" and "undervalued" by the Pittsburgh Steelers during contract negotiations, leading to his trade to the Dallas Cowboys. Porter told reporters that his new organization in Dallas has demonstrated a greater appreciation for his worth.

"It was the value. I didn’t feel like it was really that over there," Porter said, referring to his time with the Steelers. "[Dallas] is showing me that they value me more over here so far with the talks that I’ve had. I feel like that’s all I need to really show them I can do what I do."

The 32nd overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft was entering the final year of his rookie contract with Pittsburgh, and talks had reportedly stalled. Porter's perspective suggests a significant difference in how his value was perceived by the two franchises.

According to reports, the trade materialized rapidly on Wednesday. Initially, the Steelers had no plans to trade Porter. However, his decision to withdraw from practice that day, citing a recurring back issue, appeared to fracture the trust between the player and the team. Porter had participated fully in the previous day's practice, making his withdrawal a turning point in the situation.
