Joe Rogan has cautioned liberals against attempting to shift Texas into a Democratic stronghold, expressing concern that such a change could dismantle the state's distinctive character and appeal. Rogan, who relocated from Los Angeles to Austin in 2020, stated on The Joe Rogan Experience that the Texas capital's progressive nature functions effectively because it exists within a predominantly conservative state, creating a political equilibrium he values.
He challenged what he described as "coastal elite" stereotypes of Texas, asserting that the state is not defined by perceived ignorance or foolishness. Rogan characterized Austin as a liberal, easygoing, and progressive city where residents, even those with progressive views, are more moderate.
Rogan's remarks coincide with a Fox News poll indicating a potentially more competitive political landscape in Texas for statewide elections in 2026 than was observed in the 2024 presidential race. The poll showed Democratic challenger James Talarico leading Republican Ken Paxton by a three-point margin, 51% to 47%.
Rogan contrasted Austin with cities like Los Angeles and New York, suggesting that progressive ideologies have become more entrenched in those liberal strongholds. He believes Austin's unique environment is a product of its balance between liberal urban centers and a conservative statewide political framework.
"The liberals that want to turn Texas blue... don't," Rogan stated. "You're gonna ruin it. You're gonna ruin it for you too. You don't get it."
His migration to Austin during the COVID-19 pandemic was influenced by California's congestion, cost of living, and political climate, alongside his exclusive deal with Spotify that moved production of The Joe Rogan Experience to Texas. Rogan's political stances have evolved, having previously endorsed Bernie Sanders in the 2020 Democratic primary and later praising Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. He currently identifies as politically independent and has criticized both major parties.
The Fox survey also highlighted potential vulnerabilities for Republicans. While 89% of Republicans support Paxton, Democratic challenger Talarico has 98% support from Democrats. Notably, nearly a quarter of non-MAGA Republicans indicated a willingness to vote for Talarico, suggesting a possible erosion of GOP unity.
Furthermore, the poll suggests Democrats currently hold an enthusiasm advantage, with Democratic voters reporting greater motivation to vote. The survey also indicated a decline in Donald Trump's favorability in Texas, shifting from 55% favorable and 44% unfavorable during the 2024 election cycle to 45% favorable and 54% unfavorable in the latest poll.
