Joe Rogan Defends Shane Gillis Amid Backlash Over SNL Monologue
The podcast host argued that comedian Shane Gillis's jokes about gym attire are not rooted in misogyny.
Podcaster Joe Rogan has defended comedian Shane Gillis following backlash over his recent Saturday Night Live monologue, which drew criticism for jokes about women's gym attire.
Rogan, speaking on his podcast, stated that Gillis is a "great guy" and that his jokes were "just a joke." The controversy centered on Gillis's remarks about women dressing provocatively while filming themselves at the gym. Rogan addressed the criticism, acknowledging that the word "whore" used in the joke might be offensive but argued that Gillis's humor is not driven by genuine misogyny.
"I guess the word ‘whore’ is what gets them. I get it. I get that you get upset. Well, it's also because like real misogyny actually exists," Rogan said during the podcast. "So, when you see a guy joking around about a woman dressing like a whore, you connect it to horrible thoughts, like horrible actions, like real actual evil men that actually. Because, like, there's a lot of men that genuinely hate women. Shane Gillis is not one of them."
Rogan also commented on the "word police" who he believes are overly sensitive to certain language. He argued that words like "whore" can be used in different contexts, even admitting he has used it to describe himself in a professional capacity when accepting a lucrative offer to host a revival of "Fear Factor."
Gillis, known for his politically incorrect style of comedy, hosted SNL and delivered a monologue that included observations about public gyms. The remarks led to accusations of misogyny from some viewers and commentators.
Gillis has previously appeared on Rogan's podcast, which often features discussions with comedians and commentary on current events and culture. Rogan's defense aligns with his past stances on free speech and humor, often pushing back against what he perceives as overly restrictive sensitivities in public discourse.
