Podcaster Joe Rogan has criticized President Donald Trump's renaming of Lake Ontario to "Lake America" as a tactic to distract from the war in Iran. Rogan, who has previously endorsed Trump, stated on his podcast that the name change is an attempt to divert public attention from the ongoing conflict.
"It’s to distract you from the fact we are in a war we can’t win in Iran," Rogan said during an episode, referencing the tariff dispute with Canada that preceded the renaming. He questioned the significance of the name change, stating, "It doesn’t make any sense."
The war in Iran has reportedly become a point of concern for the Republican party, with polls indicating a decline in voter approval due to rising gas prices and living costs. Rogan characterized the renaming as politically unsound, suggesting it could be used as evidence that Republicans are not prioritizing the interests of everyday Americans.
"Who cares if it’s Lake Ontario? It’s a good name. We’ve had that name forever," Rogan added.
Rogan is not the only conservative commentator to express disapproval. Matt Walsh, a political commentator who has supported Trump, called the decision "dumb," noting that the name "Lake Ontario" has American historical significance dating back centuries and predates both the United States and Canada, originating from the Wyandot people.
Lake Ontario earned its title more than 400 years ago from the Wyandot people, an Indigenous nation that lived in the North American Great Lakes region. The name predates both the United States and Canada.
Rogan has increased his criticism of the Trump administration during its second term. He has previously spoken out against the administration's handling of the Epstein files, referred to immigration raids as "insane," and denounced the administration's support for Israel, calling the conflict in Gaza indefensible. He has consistently voiced frustration over the war with Iran, citing the deaths of 18 U.S. service members and billions in costs, arguing that "most people don’t want it."
"They’re the only people that seem to be thinking it’s a good idea in this country," Rogan said of supporters of Israel. "Most people are horrified by the idea, because Trump was elected — one of the pillars that he stood for, apparently, was that he doesn’t want any more wars."
Rogan's comments coincide with Trump's announcement of new retaliatory strikes against Iran, which reportedly resulted in civilian casualties. Trump stated on social media that further retaliation from Iran would be met with a more severe response.
