Joe Girardi Defends Aaron Boone, Calls 2026 Yankees Season His 'Best Year of Managing'
The former Yankees manager voiced support for Aaron Boone amidst calls for his dismissal following another postseason disappointment.
Former New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi has publicly defended current manager Aaron Boone, suggesting that the 2026 season, despite ending in another American League Division Series sweep, represented Boone's most effective work.
Boone's job security has come under scrutiny since the Yankees were eliminated by the Tampa Bay Rays. A poll by The Post indicated a significant portion of readers favored Boone's dismissal.
However, Girardi, who managed the Yankees to their last World Series title, argued on "The Show with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman" that Boone maximized the team's potential given the circumstances. "I think you could argue this was his best year of managing," Girardi stated. "I think he got the most out of this team during the course of the season with all they had to deal with."
Girardi highlighted Boone's ability to adapt the team's strategy, shifting from a power-hitting approach to one reliant on pitching. "They had to win them from a pitching standpoint, different from some of the years past where they would win by just outslugging people. He couldn’t do that this year. And I think he ran the bullpen extremely well and got the most out of those guys."
Regarding the Yankees' offensive struggles throughout the season, Girardi placed the responsibility on the players rather than the manager. "Can you say that that’s his fault? I don’t think so," he said. "To me, that’s not his fault. I just don’t think the guys had the years that they projected them to have, or some of the guys just aren’t as good as they thought they would be."
Boone has managed the Yankees for nine seasons, reaching the World Series only once during his tenure.
