Joe Buck, Troy Aikman Sideline Contract Dispute for MNF Broadcast
The broadcast duo appeared on air without apparent tension despite recent reports of a contract disagreement.

The "Monday Night Football" broadcast between the 49ers and Commanders proceeded without any overt signs of tension between announcers Joe Buck and Troy Aikman, despite reports of a contract dispute that surfaced earlier in the week. The two commentators did not address the situation on air as they opened the broadcast from Levi’s Stadium.
Last week, prior to the Rams-Bills game, there were indications of friction between Buck and Aikman regarding upcoming contract extensions with ESPN. Photos and videos from the game’s pre-show activities at SoFi Stadium appeared to show the two not interacting or entering the broadcast booth together.
Buck, 57, recently agreed to a six-year contract extension reportedly worth around $108 million with ESPN. This deal positions him to cover the network's second Super Bowl in 2031, following its first in February 2027. Aikman, 59, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the current season, has not yet received a contract offer from ESPN. He has been Buck's broadcast partner for 25 years.
Following the reports of a dispute, Aikman commented on his future with the network. "It just seems to be where they’re going — that they’re gonna go in a different direction because there’s been no talks, no contract negotiations," Aikman said in an interview. He added that with his contract ending in March, shortly after the Super Bowl on February 14, it seemed unlikely that ESPN would retain him without a deal in place. Aikman stated that he would broadcast through the remainder of the season and then explore his options as a free agent.
Speculation about Aikman's next move includes a potential shift to CBS's lead NFL broadcast booth, which may have an opening. Buck and Aikman joined ESPN in the 2022 offseason on five-year deals, transitioning from Fox. At that time, Aikman finalized his deal first, with Buck following weeks later after Fox agreed to release him from the final year of his contract.
