Jo Whiley has announced the death of her father, Martin, sharing an emotional tribute on social media. The radio and television presenter's loss comes weeks after she had shared an update about her father's ongoing battle with Parkinson's disease.

Whiley, 61, posted a series of photographs and video clips of her father on Instagram, describing him as "the kindest man" who "lived solely to make others happy." She recalled how her father, an electrician, was known in his community and was particularly devoted to his family, including his grandchildren.

"He may have had the saddest childhood but he triumphed by giving me, Frances, and his grandchildren the happiest childhoods anyone could have dreamt of," Whiley wrote, referencing her sister Frances, who has cri du chat syndrome. She also credited her father with instilling in her a love for music, recalling him playing music on a building site.

The presenter’s celebrity friends offered condolences on her post. Fearne Cotton wrote, "Love and strength to you today Jo. We are all here for you. Love you," while Davina McCall and Denise Van Outen also sent messages of support.

Whiley's announcement follows her recent public discussion of her family's health challenges. In an interview for Woman & Home magazine in September, she stated that while personal matters had been difficult, they were improving. She had previously described caring for her parents, including her mother's back surgery and her father's Parkinson's, as her primary concerns that occupied her world.

While discussing her father's condition on her "Dig It" podcast, Whiley shared that he had been reluctant to take his medication, questioning its necessity. She described it as a "heartbreaking moment" when she had to explain that Parkinson's disease is incurable. She characterized their daily interactions as feeling like "Groundhog Day" due to the repetitive conversations.

A spokesperson for BBC Radio 2 stated that the station is thinking of Whiley and her family and that she will return to her evening show when she feels ready. An insider added that producers have granted Whiley ample time off, emphasizing the close relationship she had with her father.

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological condition that affects movement. It impacts around one in 500 people in the UK, with approximately 127,000 living with the condition. In the U.S., about one million people are affected. The disease causes symptoms such as muscle stiffness, tremors, and fatigue, and while there is no cure, numerous scientific trials are underway to find ways to manage or halt its progression.
