JJ Watt Named Lead CBS NFL Analyst, Replacing Tony Romo
CBS has finalized its broadcast booth, signing JJ Watt to a long-term deal as lead color analyst following Tony Romo's departure.
CBS announced Wednesday it has signed JJ Watt to a multi-year contract extension to serve as the lead color analyst for its NFL broadcasts. Watt steps into the role previously held by Tony Romo, whose tenure with the network concluded following an OWI arrest.
Romo joined CBS in 2017 and worked alongside Jim Nantz for nine seasons. His departure from the network was precipitated by legal issues stemming from an operating while intoxicated arrest, which ultimately led to his exit from CBS.
While the specific terms of Watt's new deal were not disclosed, Romo was reportedly earning a substantial salary. Reports indicate that CBS settled with Romo, who had approximately $72 million remaining on his contract over four years, to facilitate the transition to Watt. Watt had initially filled in for Romo on a temporary basis.
The NFL broadcasting landscape has seen significant movement recently. This change at CBS occurs amidst other shifts, including speculation surrounding Troy Aikman's broadcast partnership and potential moves to other networks. Watt's stable, long-term commitment to CBS removes him as a potential candidate for other broadcast openings.
