JJ Redick Hints at Lakers' Improved Fit Without LeBron James

Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick remarked on Thursday that the current team's roster is the first in his three years with the organization where he feels the pieces "actually fit together." The comment came during media availability as the Lakers prepare to begin a full season without LeBron James, marking the first time in eight years he has not been a member of the team's roster.

James announced his departure from the Lakers in July, subsequently signing a two-year, $7.95 million veteran minimum contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. His exit initiated a period of significant roster changes under team president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka.

The Lakers have shed veteran players such as Rui Hachimura, Marcus Smart, Deandre Ayton, Jaxson Hayes, and Luke Kennard. Simultaneously, the team has focused on acquiring new talent and retaining key players. Austin Reaves received a maximum contract extension, and Walker Kessler was acquired via a sign-and-trade deal with the Utah Jazz. The team also added Quentin Grimes, Sandro Mamukelashvili, and Collin Sexton to bolster the offense, while Matisse Thybulle and Ziaire Williams were brought in to strengthen the defense.

Redick expressed confidence in the new acquisitions and the team's direction. "There is a very clear ask for you to be able to play. And if you don’t do those things, then you’re not gonna play. That’s just the reality," Redick told reporters. He added that he has communicated his vision for the team to the players, and the reception has been positive. "We have high confidence in these guys that they’re going to buy into that. It’s going to create naturally healthy competition, and everybody at some point will inevitably get a chance to impact our team and impact winning."

The Lakers' roster construction this season was reportedly centered around acquiring players to complement Luka Doncic, a shift from previous seasons where the team was built around James.
