JJ McCarthy's Wife Celebrates Quarterback's First Start With New York Giants

JJ McCarthy's wife, Katya McCarthy, celebrated his successful first start for the New York Giants by posting her admiration on social media. The Giants secured an overtime victory against the Houston Texans on Sunday, with McCarthy at the helm.

'God, I love you,' Katya wrote on Instagram, accompanying highlights from the game with the caption, 'So deserving.' This moment follows a period of uncertainty for the quarterback, who began his career with the Minnesota Vikings in 2024 before falling out of favor.

McCarthy was traded to the Giants for a fifth-round draft pick after the team lost starting quarterback Jaxson Dart to a knee injury. With backup Jameis Winston struggling in Dart's absence, Giants coach John Harbaugh promoted McCarthy.

Despite a mixed performance in relief of Winston the previous week, McCarthy delivered a strong showing in his first start. He completed 20 of 28 passes for 252 yards and, crucially, did not commit any turnovers, a contrast to his previous starts with the Vikings.

'Obviously there were moments in the past where I was like, 'Why me?' McCarthy told reporters after the win. 'A beautiful thing that was said in chapel one time was, 'Don't ask why; ask what's next.' Really just focus on the next step in front of you and how you could attack that to the best of your ability. It's one of those things where you think you're starting over, but no, you're starting from experience. To be able to be plugged into this group and this culture, I'm just extremely honored.'

Harbaugh praised McCarthy's performance, stating, 'I thought he did a great job. He made some great throws. I'm sure he didn't play perfect, but he played a heck of a football game, and he deserves a lot of credit.' The coach awarded McCarthy the honorary game ball following the victory.

In a locker room speech captured on video, McCarthy expressed his gratitude to the team: 'I don't got a whole lot to say, but I am just so frigging blessed to be part of this group. I felt you guys, all frigging day, had my back, and you know I got yours the rest of the fing way. Hey, this is just the fing beginning. This group is so talented, but the secret sauce is the s*** we just did out there, the resilience, the will to finish no matter what it looks like. I f***ing love you boys.'

McCarthy's return to winning form occurred in Houston's Reliant Stadium, the same venue where he previously won a national championship with the Wolverines under Harbaugh's brother, Jim. The quarterback and Katya Kuropas, who married in April following the birth of their first child, appear to be settling into the New York area, with Katya recently posting a photo from an upscale Manhattan restaurant.
